Episode 103: Have a Heart!

Series: Radio Rounds
From: Radio Rounds
Length: 00:50:31

We were joined by Dr. Franklin Handel, a cardiologist from Dayton, Ohio. Dr. Handel discussed the changes he has seen in the field of cardiology during his 26 years of practice and offered insight as to the future of the specialty. Dr. Handel also discussed the importance of humanism in medicine and shared stories from his own experiences caring for patients. While live on the air, we learned that Dr. Handel was once the President of his medical school class, as a medical student at the University of Pennsylvania. This was especially fitting because of our second guest for this episode, TJ Hufford, the President of the first year class at the Boonshoft School of Medicine. TJ discussed medical student involvement in the community and shared experiences that highlight the importance of medical students "having a heart." Read the full description.

A previously healthy 16 year old girl is evaluated for fever, sore throat, lymph node enlargement, and active polyarthritis of the wrist, elbows, knees and ankles for the past week. An erythematous macular rash is noted on her abdomen. Laboratory studies reveal an elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate, mild hemolytic anemia, normal urinalysis, and positive rheumatoid factor and antinuclear antibodies. What is the most likely diagnosis?

THOUGHTS: We want to mention some other highlights of this week's show and share some important links with all of you! First, we discussed the recent and ongoing swine flu outbreak, and if you would like more information regarding it, visit the CDC website at http://cdc.gov/swineflu/

In addition, we featured the musical talents of Dr. Gary Onady, a Professor at the Boonshoft School of Medicine (more information coming soon), as well as Steve Zitelli and Matt Hensel, third year students who recently won the School's annual talent show. Here is the Youtube clip of Steve's and Matt's winning performance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S4PL9yop9xQ
