Sauna - Going "All The Way"

From: Bill Palladino
Length: 00:08:32

A producer's take on the sauna and being naked in front of others. Read the full description.

Screen_shot_2011-05-09_at_5 First broadcast as part of RadioAnyway's themed show "All The Way," on WNMC-FM in Traverse City, Michigan. It's an essay piece from producer Palladino describing his experience in saunas over the course of twenty-five years. From his first sauna in a farm-field in North Dakota, where he dreads being naked in front of friends and strangers, to a now weekly event where he regularly meets people for the first time "sans chemise!" It's punctuated with a little music and some ambience from within an actual sauna. Somewhat humorous, somewhat reflective.

Review of Sauna - Going "All The Way"

This piece is full of gentle humor, insecurity and the pleasant absurdity of nudity. A full Monty in all it's "fecund pendulousity." Very entertaining.

Review of Sauna - Going "All The Way"

A delightfully gentle reflection on the fears and joys of getting naked with friends and strangers. The narrator's folksy charm seems sincere and his thoughts are intelligent and well written. The use of music and sauna sound moved the piece along at just the right pace. As someone who sometimes gets embarrassed alone in the shower, I could almost imagine myself sitting butt naked in the hot, steamy sauna, relaxed and congenially chatting about the state of the world or my dog's latest antics. Almost, I sigh... Radio is great for the imagination and this piece made me imagine it might be possible. Maybe I should give it a go?

For fifteen years I lived in North Dakota and Minnesota, so I guess it was inevitable, surrounded by so much Scandinavian heritage, that eventually I’d find myself removing my clothes and squeezing into a small cedar-lined room with six or eight other people. “Betchya by golly - Don’t cha know!”

Music Cue:

My first experience was when I was still a young college kid fresh off the streets of New York. I was in an old rust-weary tour-bus transversing the Great Plains state with a theatrical group. We’d stopped for the night at a friend’s farmhouse in the verdant Red River Valley between Fargo and Bismarck. As the young buck in the group they drew great satisfaction in finding ways to shock my garish eastern sensibilities with their famously bland mid-western ones.

On this late afternoon, we’d arrived just...
