Piece Description

In this hour of The Blues & Beyond, we'll feature the new Skip James reissue album "Yola My Blues Away" from Pristine Audio, a restoration of all of Skip James' scratchy, and very rare, Paramount label recordings from 1931. The improvement over past reissues of these records is noteworthy and may give these blues gems a new life. Skip James, unlike most Mississippi blues musicians of the 1930s, was a stellar performer on both guitar and piano. It would be three decades after these recordings were made before Skip James recorded and performed again, during the folk revival of the 1960s. We'll hear other interpretations of these songs too, from R. L. Burnside, and Cephas & Wiggins.

We'll also hear a song from Shemekia Copeland from her latest CD, a career-expanding album called "Never Going Back," and harmonica player Billy Branch from "Chicago Blues: A Living History" on which contemporary Chicago blues musicians honor the  great players of Chicago's past.

Plus, some and some exciting new jazz releases, including albums from sax player Ada Rovatti, an Italian musician who likes a little Irish in her jazz, and organist Papa John DeFrancesco -- and the new album from bassist Stanley Clarke "Jazz In The Garden" featuring the scintillating piano prodigy Hiromi Uehara.

Promos included: (1) promo-skip-james.mp2 for this program (2) promo-clarke.mp2 for the next program.
