For more than two years, many girls and young women in the United States have been receiving a vaccine designed to help prevent cervical cancer.  The vaccine prevents several types of the human papillomavirus, which cause unpleasant genital warts as well as most cancers of the cervix.  But HPV isn’t just a problem for women. Men can also get genital warts, and scientists are increasingly finding links between the virus and a host of other cancers in both genders. Now the makers of the first HPV vaccine on the market have asked regulators for permission to vaccinate boys and young men.  HPV and Men tells the story of men who have been diagnosed with cancer triggered by HPV, and research into better understanding the virus.  From NET Radio in Nebraska and Soundprint, Sarah McCammon reports.

HPV and Men is part of Soundprint’s World of Viruses series. The series, supported in part by the National Institutes for Health, is scheduled to be broadcast over the next two years. A 29:00 minute documentary about HPV, called The Shy Virus, is currently available.
