Rnlogoenglish_small In North America, ‘having a pow wow’ is an informal expression for holding a meeting or a serious conversation. The Native American term ‘pow wow’ comes from the Algonquin language group, and originally it did indeed refer to a gathering of revered spiritual leaders. In our times, pow wows are fabulous celebratory events. These explosions of music and dance go on throughout the year all over the USA and Canada. Local pow wows and large intertribal gatherings can be positively hallucinatory, with hundreds of feathered and painted dancers mingling and jingling near the traditional arena. Porcupine, South Dakota, is a small town on Pine Ridge Reservation, where the Oglala Lakota people display their heritage with vigour. The drums they play are the heartbeat of their people - while the pow wow is open to other seekers on the road. Get the adrenaline going and join Martha Hawley for the Powwow at Porcupine.

Review of RN Documentary: Pow Wow at Porcupine

Interviews well balanced with music and sound; subject matter is unique and truly American - - our own First Peoples in their glory. Young voices, elders and womens voices all telling their stories of Pow Wow. Moving tale of an African-American male who became a brother of a full-blooded Native sister and then was invited to lead the Pow Wow parade as an Elder. A mother sits beneath a tree outside the dancing circle sewing a dress and moccasins for her daughter; she projects they will be done next year! A young girl has danced for thirteen years. The journalist asks how old she is: "thirteen."

Only complaint is that it rambles on a bit too long without clear structure. That doesn't detract from its emotional impact. A great feature piece for early Summer.

Summer in South Dakota in the USA. The sun is as intense as the pow wow beat, the earth parched and cracked, but not at the pow wow grounds. I’m in Porcupine, a town on Pine Ridge Reservation, not far from Rapid City.

The reservation is home to the Oglala Lakota or Oglala Sioux tribe, part of the Great Sioux Nation.

Hundreds of spectators, vendors, singers and dancers pile in: men, women, boys, girls and toddlers. Babies are carried into the dance, to get that pow wow feeling from the start.
