Piece Description
TOLD AND RETOLD: Story and song with Gioia Timpanelli. Master story teller and author Gioia Timpanelli (What Makes A Child Lucky and Sometimes the Soul: Two Novellas of Sicily) celebrates one of our oldest forms, and most vital, of expression, in this second in a series of seasonal specials. This hour-long spring season special draws on traditional and contemporary story and memoir to explain and express all the cycles of creation and existence, our relationship to nature and each other, and the quiet miracle of day to day life. Program segments include readings by Timpanelli of traditional Native American and Japanese stories interwoven with music and commentary about the place of story in our lives. "It shall be told and retold" is a traditional Italian saying that points up the way in which the form moves from generation to generation. In addition to Timpanelli's readings, there are featured readings by Robert Bly, as well as a reading by Tim Guinee of an excerpt of the play, “Him”, written by Daisy Foote. Then a discussion with the playwright, Daisy Foote and actor Tim Guinee. The hour is rounded out with a lively discussion with guest artist Robert Bly. Bly reads a gorgeous selection of poems, and he and Timpanelli -- long time friends and fellow performers -- explore the nature of the creative act.
