Piece Description

In Persian culture, the New Year begins on the first day of spring. Most of the ceremonies are lively, but one particularly so: Chahar Shanbeh Souri. ["char SHOM-bay SOO-ree"] Basically, it consists of people taking turns jumping over a fire. In Seattle, hundreds from the Iranian community gather at the beach to keep the tradition alive.

Produced by Negin Almassi ["neg-EEN al-MOSS-y"] and Hammad Ahmed ["hum-MOD ah-MED"], with support from the Association of Independents in Radio.
