My first job out of college was to be the house manager at the Long Wharf Theater in New Haven, CT. That meant that I was in charge of the ushers and getting the audience in and out of the theater on time. I like to tell people, I’m the guy who blinks the light during the intermission to make sure people get in.
I had been doing a lot of house management stuff at SUNY-Albany – it was part of my graduate fellowship, doing a lot of house management work, I had a lot of experience at it. I was trying to get into Yale and the playwriting program there and I figured living in, being part of the New Haven community would help me in that regard.
So it’s my second week on the job and I’m training the new guy who is tearing tickets for me. And I see in the lobby somebody facing the wall in an obscure corner, every once in a while looking furtively over his shoulder. It’s Al Pacino, lookin...
