Piece Description
This week saw another near-deadly casualty of marijuana prohibition in the story of Derek Copp; a 20 year-old college student known for his love of music and laid-back demeanor, who was shot in the chest by a specialized drug enforcement unit.
The story continues to unfold with excellent, comprehensive coverage from the Grand Rapids Press. I encourage everyone to read up, Derek is an incredible young man ...it is a moving series of events. http://www.mlive.com/news/grand-rapids/index.ssf/gvsu_shooting/
Summary:
Police have acknowledged Derek was unarmed when the West Michigan Enforcement Team served a still-sealed warrant at his off campus apartment. Michigan State Police are investigating the shooting.
Neighbors said that they often smelled marijuana outside his door, but that the building had a ‘no party' rule. Derek was known for his support of marijuana policy reform., including joining a Facebook group related to Michigan's medical marijuana efforts.
Protests were already under way on the Grand Valley State University campus. Amazingly, Derek appeared by cell phone at a rally Friday, to shout over a bullhorn "Give Peace a Chance" to the crowd from his hospital bed.

Also this week- My Brief Appearance on MSNBC's Marijuana Inc. with Al Roker
Some people go to great extremes to get on television. But I would never audition for reality shows, game shows or news presenting. You will not find my headshot submitted fr commercial or film work anymore.
I live in a world of sound and a lot fo it is my own voice, amplified. Radio, webcasting, streaming, podcasting voiceover. Days are spent splicing, cutting, mending, twisting, masking, combining all of the strands of the waves as they dance together to form fully knitted sounds and then a produced show.
But amazingly and, quite literally, out of the blue Sunday night I appeared in a video clip on national cable.
To say all of this was weird would be a huge understatement.
CelebStoner has a review of the program, with my quotes- read it here (Disclosure- I do contribute to that site...)
So while some may pine away for a little TV time, I got about 60 seconds on MSNBC's Marijuana Inc just doing my 2007 job: Running the most popular online program about marijuana in the USA, NORML's Daily AudioStash. The podcast is a serious and comprehensive take on cannabis reform that is often referred to as the NPR of marijuana. Allen St. Pierre the Director of NORML and I developed the program in 2006.
The program, Marijuana Inc., was hosted by Al Roker which I find this strange and creepy somehow . The former Cleveland Weatherman, then national weatherman is now looking into medical marijuana in California. Perhaps he is trying to predict the hurricane of cannabis prohibition reform? Roker is also producing the series DEA for Spike TV. That show is filming in Newark, also straggly creepy...Why? Because I live in New Jersey and Roker had to go all the way to LA for the clip me talking about marijuana reform.
My cameo appearance in the MSNBC program stemmed from covering a federal DEA raid on a state authorized medical marijuana dispensary; The Arts District Healing Center in West Hollywood.
The full NORML podcast about that 2007 raid can be found online: PLAY MP3- NORML Podcast 10-30-07
