Piece Description
This program (hosted by Sanford Ungar, former host of All Things Considered) examines the roots of hatred in Christianity, Judaism, and Islam and considers whether people of faith can ever reconcile those divisions. The world's great monotheistic faiths share centuries-old traditions, but they are also locked in dangerous rivalries that permeate contemporary thought. This program probes this duality and shares stories that confirm the power of faith to overcome legacies of hostility -- illuminating ways that people work beyond hatred and stereotypes.
REACTION TO THIS PROGRAM
Review by Chelsea Merz on PRX
As "Peace on Earth" is a common saying during the holiday season this
program is a perfect broadcasting choice through New Year's. Of course it
doesn't really need a particular context for broadcasting--you could listen
to this whenever, wherever. Monotheism and religious pluralism are weighty
topics indeed but this show renders them weightless: listening to this show
is without effort. The anecdotes and the interviews are captivating, the
lessons learned and wisdom shared are inspiring. One of the best things
about this show is how it ends. After examining the hostility and hatred
that emerges when different faiths collide this show offers ways in which we can establish peace and understanding.

Review by Cheryl Vallejo on PRX
This piece has reiterated the teachings of my World Religion class at SDSU.
An excellent piece on what the world needs, and needs to hear, for there
ever to be peace. I recommend everyone listen to this piece.

Review of With God On Our Side: From Rivalry To ReconciliationIt is an excellent piece that deals with the differences between Muslims, Jews and Christians. These differences can be painful and difficult to discuss, but we live in a world where the discussion must take place. This is a heavy piece, and will take considerable concentration to grasp the depth of the production. If there is a weakness in the program it is that the diversity of voices within Islam and Christianity are more pronounced than those of Judaism in the opening half of the piece. The second half of the program is inspiring because it gives first hand accounts of how hatred and differences can be overcome. The last portion of the piece is a roundtable discussion with all three religions represented and offers a good example of how people can speak about the differences between faith perspectives with respect for others. Highly recommended as we approach major holy seasons of Jews and Christians.

Review of With God On Our Side: From Rivalry To Reconciliation
This is an extremely important piece of radio, and one that should be widely heard. It geats at an absolutely central question: under what circumstances can these faiths reach some kind of intellectual accomodation? the stories are wonderful, especially of Muslim-Jewish rapprochement in America. My only caveat is: the Christian representative is perhaps not altogether or even very representative of the current state of American Christianity, and hence the real dogmatism is only tangentially engaged. But an excellent and brave start!
