This series first aired on the archives program Rewind on the CBC Radio station of Sirius Satellite Radio in February 2008.

All week we’ve been hearing the voice of Martin Luther King Jr.- his beginnings as a Baptist preacher, his burgeoning interest in non-violent tactics to achieve civil rights, and his views on everything from the Vietnam war to young people to sit-ins. Today, his assassination. We start with a CBC news special from April 4, 1968.

That CBC special report was from April 4, 1968. Today, the assassination of Martin Luther King. King’s death led to a wave of riots in more than 100 cities. Five days later President Lyndon Johnson declared a national day of mourning. Two months later, escaped convict James Earl Ray was captured and charged with King’s murder. He confessed and was sentenced to 99 years in prison. Ray spent the rest of his life trying unsuccessfully to withdraw his guilty plea and secure the trial he never had.
