Series: Blues & Beyond
From: WXPN
Length: 00:59:04

Cedric Burnside, grandson of the great R. L. Burnside, teams up with Lightnin' Malcolm for some edgy blues. Also two very different takes on an old spiritual, including a version from the great Mavis Staples, and organ music including Barbara Dennerlein on a full pipe organ. Read the full description.

Cedricburnside_small We'll open up a new album from Cedric Burnside and Lightnin' Malcolm on this show.  Cedric Burnside is a grandson of the great Mississippi bluesman R. L. Burnside. For a number of years he played drums in his grandfather's band, and more recently made an album with his uncle Gary Burnside under the name Burnside Exploration.  His new album with long-time family friend Lightnin' Malcolm is called "2 Man Wrecking Crew." Burnside plays some guitar on it as well as drums. We'll also play a tune from the late great R. L. Burnside himself, with Cedric on the drums. We'll hear a great old spiritual performed by Mavis Staples at a small club in Chicago last summer and in a very different way by jazz trumpeter Russell Gunn some years ago, and organ music -- from the Oliver Lake Organ Trio with Jared Gold on the Hammond B3, and from Barbara Dennerlein on a full pipe organ, on which the blues sounds just heavenly!

Next show: a remembrance of bluesman Sam Taylor, a wonderful songwriter, passionate singer, and guitarist, former member of Joey Dee & The Starlighters, famous for "Peppermint Twist."
