Blues & Beyond #127: Rollin' & Tumblin' keeps rollin' (and tumblin') after four decades - and Dave Holland's Sextet offers a fine new album

From: Jonny Meister
Length: 59:04

Two new versions of "Rollin' and Tumblin'" in 2008 lead us to the first two versions in 1929 and 1930, with some themes and variations along the way in between, from Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters. We also visit Dave Holland's new album and a groundbreaking album he played on in 1969, Miles Davis's "Bitches Brew." Read the full description.

Newbern_small In this hour of The Blues & Beyond, we'll be rollin' and tumblin' ... in 2008 we acquired two great new versions of the venerable blues classic "Rollin' & Tumblin'," adding to the song's eight-decade history. We'll hear both of the new ones, and the two oldest versions from 1929 and 1930 -- plus some rollin' and tumblin' themes and variations, including a Robert Johnson song and a raw rendition of "Rollin' And Tumblin'" with voices but no actual lyrics, from a blues trio that included Muddy Waters. Also in this hour -- bassist Dave Holland and his sextet - we'll check out their latest release "Pass It On," Holland is a native of England who played guitar, piano, and other instruments before taking on the double bass. He had some classical training, and brings a colorful melodic quality to jazz music. In 1968 he joined Miles Davis's group and played on Davis's groundbreaking 1969 album "Bitches Brew." As a leader himself, Holland is a subtle presence, though certainly one who directs his talented group to a thoroughly modern jazz sound -- that is, complex and challenging music that is also very enjoyable to listeners who aren't highly educated in modern jazz. We'll hear tracks from "Pass It On" and some of "Bitches Brew" too on this program.
