Our current agricultural practices are unsustainable. And with the high price of oil for fertilizers and gasoline to transport the food, its becoming out of reach for pooring populations. It barely feeds the current population. And in 50 years, we'll have 3 billion more people to feed. Dr. Despommier of Columbia University has a possible solution. Vertical Farms. Using exisiting sustainable energy and water technologies, Vertical Farms could grow food in mini self-sustaining ecosystems contained in high rise buildings.
Dr. Despommier and I discuss the technologies and politics neccesary to give these Vertical Farms rise, and he gives me a "virtual tour" on how one of these things might look like in a place like New York.
