Piece Description
In this hour of The Blues & Beyond, we'll feature tracks from McCoy Tyner's expansive new album "Guitars," on which the great jazz pianist joins up with several very different guitarists to produce a diverse set of music, old and new. Tyner, best known as the pianist in the John Coltrane Quartet, has been a band leader himself since the 1960s. On this show we will hear him with guitarists Bill Frisell, Marc Ribot, and John Scofield. His band includes Ron Carter on bass and Jack DeJohnette on drums. Also on this show, music from the late Miriam Makeba, known as Mama Africa, who passed away recently in Italy following a concert there. Despite a life of hardship and heartbreak, she always offered an uplifting message. She endured thirty years in exile from her native South Africa. Also: music from Australian Bebop Ragas (that's really their name!) and George Duke from his excellent "Dukey treat" album-- PLUS a sneak preview of Shemekia Copeland's new album coming out in 2009!
