When I was a little kid, my socks wore out in 3 days --- of course, I never had a pair of shoes until I was 20.

Back in the good old days, when one of those old brass sink faucets would drip, anyone could unscrew the top of it and put in a ten cent washer. But you can't buy a washer for the improved faucets today. They'll tell you at the hardware store that you have to throw away the whole unit and buy another one for $129.
This throw it away culture we live in today is the only thing that keeps the country going. Patriotic Americans throw away their hair dryers and their toasters every six months just for the good of the country. The Great Depression was caused by products that never wore out. No one ever had to replace anything, and the economy collapsed.
You might know that Edison's original light bulb did nothing for the economy of this country. The first bulbs he made lasted for 12 years. When I was a kid there was one of those old bulbs down in our cellar that had been there since power...
