Review of How many times a day should you go poo poo?

Caramba, this is the most off-the-wall piece I've reviewed in my nearly two years of writing for PRX. Mostly in Spanish, this week's episode of "La Botica de Gaby" ("Gaby's Drugstore"), deals with a subject most gringos wouldn't go near with a ten-foot pole.

With infectious good humor and an openness I sure don't associate with the uptight Puritan forebears who've had so much influence over our North American culture, eight 20-something bilingual Latino-Americans chat about -- well, the polite way of putting it is that they chat about "going to the bathroom." How frequently we move our bowels is the subject of their conversation.

One guy opines that it's normal to excrete three times a day, after each meal, while a senorita confesses that she sometimes has to wait for days to have a "po po" (yes, the Spanish for "poo poo" is the same as the surname of Edgar Allan Poe). Anal jokes about constipation and diarrhea pile up like tortillas.

Warning: This piece may not appeal to a PD in Peoria -- though the Latino community on the Illinois River would probably savor this discussion in colloquial Spanish. What I'm struck by is Drugstore Gaby's lack of inhibition, her willingness to discuss a subject that's taboo north of the Rio Grande.

Enough of this piece is in slangy North American English for even a listener in flyover land to revel in its energy and high spirits. As well as learning a bit about a bodily function we humans all have in common, "How Many Times a Day Should You Go Poo Poo" may convey more about Latino culture than a crash course in Mexican history.

No crap, this piece rocks!
