A couple of decades before the words "global warming" hit the headlines, a loner named Billy Barr moved into the Colorado wilderness. He lived by himself at nearly 10,000 feet , miles from the nearest town. So to pass the time, he kept meticulous notes about the weather and animals. For scientists studying climate change, Billy's notebooks turn out to be heaven sent -- without this kind of data, it's tricky figuring out the way things used to be. And now there's a full-speed search on to find more people like him. From Gothic, Colorado, Zachary Barr -- no relation to Billy, by the way -- has the story.

The Great Billy Barr
I met Billy during his first summer in Gothic while he was camping in a tent north of the town across from my old mining cabin, better known as the "Camp Robin Lode". I was up from Texas, just out of Texas A&M University, spending a few weeks prospecting and just enjoying the beauty of the surrounding mountains. Before I left back for Texas, I offered Billy my mining cabin to stay in during the winter if he chose to do so. I haven't contacted him, nor seen him in years. The rest is history --- Billy became part of the mountains, his love of nature and dedication to a better understanding of how and why and the meaning of the world around us. I am happy that I ran across this article on Billy Barr --- I wish him the best of luck, and may he never be forgotten.
