Piece Description
Trumpeter Arturo Sandoval first met the late Dizzy Gillespie when Sandoval ? without revealing that he was a musician? offered to drive Gillespie to musical hotspots in the barrios of Havana. In the '70s, Sandoval teamed up with Chucho Valdez and Pacquito D'Rivera to lead the virtuosic group known as Irakere, which blended traditional Afro-Cuban beats with American jazz and funk. Gillespie later hired Sandoval for his band, and eventually helped him defect from Cuba. Sandoval is fluent in bebop, Latin jazz and classical music, and he doesn't have much patience for artificial boundaries and stereotypes. In this piece he proves his versatility by impersonating trumpet styles ranging from the New Orleans stomp of King Oliver to the baroque stylings of Maurice Andre. As in all the pieces in David Schulman's CPB-supported Musicians in their own words series, the story is told through a mix of the performer's voice and music. There is no reporter's voice heard, allowing the feature to be seamlessly incorporated into station news, talk, or music programming. Two mixes are provided for programming flexibility. The 3:34 short mix will fit the ATC cutaway. Scripts for intro and outro are attached, and may be edited at will. This piece works well pegged to local performances. Sandoval's tour schedule includes: Dec 15 -18 Saint Louis, Jazz At The Bistro ? Feb 18 Fairfield, CT Quick Center For The Arts ? Feb 19 Woonsocket, RI Stadium Theatre ? Feb 26 Palmetto, FL Palmetto Bay Village Center ? Mar 1-5 New York, Blue Note ? Mar 6 Coral Gables, FL Miracle Mile ? Review of Arturo Sandoval: In his own words
A virtuoso trumpeter, Sandoval's love of bebop dances out of his trumpet and his words. Here he talks about his new album which showcases his incredible talent in playing other musical styles. In addition he shares his thoughts on music and musicianship. A vey good Sandoval introduction.
