Two Hour Show - suitable for late night timeslots - two hours for the price of one.
ArtMusic Coffeehouse, September 22nd, 2004. A rousing two-hour Interview/Live Performance musical program with acoustic blues guitarist Andy Kimbel.
Beginning with a 20 minute keyboard introduction by ArtMusic Coffeehouse host Don Slepian, Andy performed a fine program of original acoustic guitar with some singing and foot stomping.
"His music is passionate, energetic and emotionally charged. Often, Andy will dazzle his audience with bluesy improvisations making it almost impossible to hear the same song performed twice the same way."
Andy Kimbel is a very talented folk and country-blues performer whose star is rising quickly on the national blues and folk scene. Listen to him play and you will hear the influences of traditional blues, folk, R&B and a touch of New Orleans style roots music.
Hard to pigeonhole, Kimbel has been likened to Lightning Hopkins, John Hammond and Leo Kotkke. He performs a unique selection of material that ranges from gentle ballads and pointed originals, to hard driving country blues and slide guitar using various tunings and harmonics. His own distinct interpretations set him apart and give even old traditional blues a new face. Andy is a great improviser, often re-inventing words and music using the themes of traditional blues stemming from the early 20’s to the mid 30’s.
"His always expressive guitar playing that ranges from frolicking and exuberant to driving and soulful. Whether picking, plucking, or using a skillful slide, Kimbel brings to the stage vision of the roots of American Music that conjures up everything from rambling railroad trains to dark and lonely nights of solitary traveling"...Big Shout Magazine

Review of Acoustic Blues Guitarist Andy KimbelVersatile guitar playing is always good company and Andy Kimbel is certainly that. I was painting my kitchen and was kept busy with his fluency in various styles: blues, country, Irish, - his playing is interspersed with interviews that are sometimes amusing, and sometimes overly enthusiastic in craft talk (which can leave the listener with a question mark overhead - notes to producer). This is easy fare to use for filling overnight - it's 2 hours which under normal circumstances might be too long - but having someone over in the corner of the room happily picking away is an easy enough way to pass the night. |

Review of Acoustic Blues Guitarist Andy Kimbel
After giving the Andy Kimbel interview a good listen, I am left with wanting to hear more even though the length of the entire program was about two hours.
I really enjoyed listening to the artist provide backgrounds and technical "notes" on some of the selections.
The music is energetic and inspiring. I like the natural feel of the show. The guitarist is talented and also humorous at times which presents a fresh uplifting experience.
Aside from being an excellent musician, Andy Kimbel exhibits a real passion for what he does that really comes across. The song selections also have a nice flow.
Perhaps a few more songs would be nice even if it means cutting down the allotted time for interviews.
