Russell, who is 82 years old and one of my mother?s cousins, says he constantly changes his telephone answering machine message to keep up with current business practices. He has perfected the useless telephone message. When you call, his machine says, "I'm sorry, all staff members are presently busy. You may elect to leave your number. Please select one of the 14 following options."
Another message Russell sometimes leaves, says, "Hi there, you have reached the right number." --- That didn't tell them anything.
You can be even more difficult when you are calling someone. Of course, the normal way to make a call, is to say, "Hi, this is Robert Skoglund. Does Bruno Peterson have time to talk with me today?" But people who don't know how to use the phone, or those who want to be cussed, never identify themselves. They might say, "Hi, is Carl Schwab there?" The person on the other end m...
