From: WXPN
Length: 00:59:00

John Lee Hooker, Jr., has released his third album. This son of one of the greatest blues artists of all times has had more than his share of troubles, but his life seems to give him an edge in his music. His songs are brutally honest and provocative, and he is not in any way copying his father. Piece Description

Much of this hour of The B&B will be devoted to John Lee Hooker, Jr. He bears one of the most well-known names in blues music, and, for whatever reasons, has faced more than his share of troubles in this life. After performing and recording in June 1972 with his father at a concert at Soledad Prison, Hooker Jr largely vanished from view, spending some time behind bars himself, and resurfacing with a debut album "Blues With A Vengeance" almost 32 years later. Hooker's music is edgy, unsettling, and captivating, and he is not at all imitative of his father. We'll feature his new album "All Odds Against Me" and hear a bit of an interview I did with him in 2004, and we have the tracks from the Soledad Prison concert where he sang lead -- which haven't been reissued on CD. Also on this show, Barbara Dennerlein returns to church-- to play blues on the church organ! This Queen of The Hammond B3 has issued a second album of jazz and blues played on a full pipe organ. We'll also hear a cut from Miles Davis with The Tadd Dameron Quintet from a 1949 French radio broadcast, magnificently restored by Andrew Rose of Pristine Audio.
