Piece Description
Lil'' Ed Williams, known as Lil' Ed because of his diminutive stature, learned slide guitar from his uncle the great Chicago blues man J. B. Hutto, who also taught Williams's his half brother Pookie Young, the bass player in his band, Lil' Ed & The Blues Imperials. Their new album "Full Tilt" is energetic and fun; Williams's slide guitar is gripping. The album also has some serious moments. reflecting Lil' Ed's own struggles in life. George Duke has played in various musical genres over the years. He worked with jazz greats, and for a while with Frank Zappa. His new album "Dukey Treats" is classic funk, with several songs that offer social commentary. Also on this show, Super Chikan (yes, that is how he spells "chicken") takes off from a blues song by John Lee Hooker, and new music from trumpeter Roy Hargrove. Plus, the late Phil Guy, who died August 20, 2008. He was the younger brother of Buddy Guy; we'll hear a track from his final album on which he is joined by his brother.
