Piece Description

Youth activism is alive and well deep in the heart of Texas. Created as a contribution to Seattle's KUOW Public Radio series on teen power, this piece is a collection of new and archived interviews and commentaries on teen activism in Austin, TX. Interviewees include Circe, Emily and Rosalind of the Angsty Teen Eco-Warriors, Josh Hagar of Playing for Glimmer, Kate Kelly of Austin's Student/Farmworker Alliance and Joey Gibson-Gonzalez of OutYouth. The piece was planned, produced, recorded and edited by Youth Spinners Ali Halpin, Hannah Hagar (Josh's big sister) and Zoe Cordes-Selbin.

YEEB review of Austin's Youth Activism

I really love the idea behind this piece: I think spotlighting what youth activists are doing, especially when it comes to environmental issues*, is really important. Unequal water distribution, plastic bag consumption, and working with farmworkers are all really cool, interesting, and underexposed environmental issues. I always love hearing the stories of people working at the grassroots level. I think you guys definitely had the content, but these kinds of stories really call for natural sound. I'd love to hear Josh playing tennis, or hear what a meeting of the angsty teen eco warriors sounds like. I know this requires a lot more work and planning and effort, but using audio beyond interviews is one of the best ways to get people to remember and take meaning from your piece. So in conclusion, you guys have a lot of really good content, and a lot to be proud of, but need some natural sound to take these kinds of pieces to the next level.

It also may have been good to have one person do the introduction and transitions between each activist, because it gets a little hard to tell who's talking and what's going on.

*Even though I'm writing this review as the as part of the editorial environmental board, I also wanted to note that spotlighting queer youth activist groups is also awesome.

Review of We've Got the Power: Austin's Youth Activism

If you're an adult whose ever been skeptical of how active teens are, then you should listen to this piece! Or if you're a teen and want to hear about other involved young people, then you should listen, too.

I think Youth Spin did a really great job of putting together this piece on teen activism. They profiled active teens located Austin, TX. Each person's story was unique and interesting. Also, I know firsthand that there are way more active teens than inactive ones. So, it's so cool to see evidence that teens are active everywhere, not just in my little sphere!

I liked 12 year old Josh Hagar, a participant in Playing for Glimmer. Playing for Glimmer is a tennis-thon which raises money to help fight third-world poverty. Hagar's already raised enough money to buy 15 water wells in Ethopia. I thought this was awesome, because when I was 12...I can definitely say none of my interests included fighting poverty. Maybe if more pre-teens were like Hagar, they could get good karma and be able to skip the awkward 14/15 year old phase!

Also, Kate Kelly and Joshua Gibson-Gonzales were two teens who both were passionate, knowledgeable, and articulate about their causes. Their enthusiasm made me feel like I should get out there right now and do something! Hopefully, if enough adults hear stories like this one, maybe teens will finally be able to shed some of their negative stereotypes.

I think maybe transitions could have been a little smoother, in terms of editing. Also, I thought maybe the stories in the middle could have been introduced a little more clearly, maybe by the narrator or someone. And the whole thing was a little lacking in sound-richness. But that didn't change the solidness of the content of this piece. Overall, it was an inspiring and enjoyable way to spend 11 minutes.
