Review of The Kabbalah of Chanukah

On lunar tides, Kislev 25th drifts through the Gregorian calendar from Thanksgiving to Boxing Day, but Chanukah gets its best due when it doesn't compete with the Santa to-do. So get out your program schedule and don't just rail against the dying of the light – light a candle to a really special special sometime from sundown December 7th until suns set December 15th.

"The Kabbalah of Chanukah" is worth the risk. This one hits for the cycle – 3 for 3 three on the PRPDs – MIND, Curiosity; SPIRIT, Inspired about culture; CRAFT, Attention to detail – music, sound, language.

I live for the transcendent possibilities of radio. Ah, but we wander for so long in the wilderness.

Then an oasis. With support from KPFA's Susan Stone, producer Russ Jennings has arranged a new invitation to an old natural mystic. I know my Chanukah data pretty well, but Estelle Frankel's evocative narrative, like letting you in on a delicious secret, is an order of magnitude up the ladder, from mind to spirit. Keep your eyes open for the miracles that surround us – that's the gift of Chanukah.

And okay, I admit, I hit Play more ready for the stories than the song. And I was wrong! I heard the light! Cantor Richard Kaplan is something beyond easy categorization. Next to you in the yellow light, his eyes are shut and his voice laughing and winking. This is music to leap cultures – like the song from Turkey, for girls, sung in Judeo-Spanish.

This "night of the year" is something deeply terrifying for all the tribes of mankind. But then, a small cross-cultural miracle. As Ms Frankel says, "Anybody who has been in love knows that miracles happen."

"The Kabbalah of Chanukah" empowers man's best hopes. And it feels good.

So do it!

Review of The Kabbalah of Chanukah

I found this show to be a breath of fresh air--not at all like the standard fare holiday program you typically hear this time of year. The second half of the show is especially inspiring, when Frankel unpacks the mystical teachings of Chanukah and Kaplan shares some of the exotic Jewish sacred music he has recorded on his 2 CD's.
