August 2008

A San Telmo Day.
The morning starts early at 437 Estados Unidos. Before dawn the old elevator begins to journey up and down the shaft, sounding hushed and muffled through the walls as if being careful not to wake those whose day has not yet begun. But if sleep has been light then I lie in bed listening to the sounds of the building coming to life while light silently enters the apartment for another day in San Telmo. The elevator seems to get louder completing with the traffic in the street below. Residents leave to work, children to school and finally my own husband closes the door and disappears out onto the sidewalk.
When I too venture down the four flights of stairs Carlos is polishing the brass on the door knobs. But he is still not sure what to do about the green paint that appeared one morning sprayed over the wrought iron leaf work guarding the glass. Since a...
