She was the first president of the Grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo a group of the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo who searched for their missing children and grandchildren from the Military coupe of 1976 in Argentina. August 5 is the day of the children and seems a good time to consider these lost children. The piece contains her story, some sound effects and music.

The Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo.

Argentina is big on anniversary celebration days. July saw the day of the friend and August the fifth is Children?s Day. Perhaps this year is particularly poignant as on June 1 2008 the first president of the Grandmother?s of the Plaza de Mayo, Alicia Zubasnabar, died at the age of ninety-two. Those of a political persuasion will know the story of the grandmothers but many of us, the age of these women?s children when they went missing, were busy raising our own families in the years between 1976 and 1983.
Alicia Zubasnabar was born in Sauce, a small town in the province of Corrientes, Argentina. There she married a steel worker, Roberto Luis de la Cuadra and had five children. Looking for better living conditions in 1959 the family moved to La Plata, the coastal capital province of Buenos Aries.
