Discoveries At Walt Disney Concert Hall: Mingus Epitaph
Series: Discoveries At Walt Disney Concert Hall
From: NPR Music
Length: 00:59:00
A full jazz orchestra performs the late Charles Mingus' personal and dynamic masterwork Epitaph, prophetically named because, as he said, he "wrote it for my tombstone." The bassist and composer wrote the piece for an ill-fated performance in 1962, and then discarded it. After Mingus died in 1979, it was reconstructed from his scores by archivist Andrew Homzy and when it was performed again, under the direction of Gunther Schuller, in 1989, the New York Times called it ?the jazz event of the decade.? This program will feature excerpts from the work.
