While watching a Wal*Mart commercial on TV, I got to thinking how things have changed since I was a kid. Have you ever stopped to ask yourself how many of your local mom and pop stores selling all kinds of things had to go under to support your Wal*Mart? And Home Depot? We used to have shoe stores and clothing stores and lots of little grocery stores. And now with the new Lowes in our area, even some of our hardware stores are going to melt away. When I was in the Coast Guard, when we were abeam of the breakwater, we?d put the Jack on Crie?s Hardware store. Now, when you sail into Rockland, instead of looking for church spires and prominent old buildings, you?ll head her for Home Depot.
