RN Documentary: On the Edge of a Volcano
Series: RN Focus on Torn Lives - Stories from the Holy Land
From: Radio Netherlands Worldwide
Length: 00:29:34
In the summer of 2002, Israel began erecting a barrier to seal off the occupied Palestinian territories. The move followed a series of Palestinian suicide bombings in Israel. The 700-kilometre structure is due to be completed by the end of this year (2005). Palestinians call it The Wall. Israel calls it a security fence.
Most Israelis are convinced that the security fence will stop suicide bombers. But the fence has also generated controversy in Israeli society. Some settlers object to it because their communities have not been included. The right-wing is angry because at the same time the barrier is being constructed, the Sharon government has decided to evacuate settlements in the Gaza Strip and probably later in some parts of the West Bank.
A significant number of Israelis realize that the fence will only further inflame Palestinian passions and will make it more difficult to reach a peace settlement.
The other documentary in this series - "Stories from Behind the Wall" - looks at the dramatic impact the fence is having on ordinary Palestinians. "The Barrier", a one-hour special, combining the Palestinian and Israeli perspectives, is also available on PRX.

Review of RN Documentary: On the Edge of a Volcano
This is a review of the second half without hearing the first-half. Radio Netherland consistently puts out top-notch audio and this piece is no exception. This is a profession piece in every way -- writing, research, production. No one should hesitate running this if it fits.
The piece fits with any story about Israel, the Middle East, the issues that the ME confronts. And, this is such an amazing story -- I really haven't given the Wall the attention it deserves. I pictured a string of wire fire with razors but didn't imagine the mammoth structure that they are constructing.
