For it is all upside down in South America. While here in West Marin we broil under the June sun and summer Solstice the residents of Buenos Aries are donning their warm coats, scarfs and gloves, and remembering to carry an umbrella when they leave home. Below the equator everything becomes relative to the Antarctic. But also this being Argentina that is not true, all the time. So on some maps north is pointing up on the page where I expect it to be, while on others the arrow north is pointing down. And that maybe part of the reason that in Buenos Aries I have yet to venture far out of the San Telmo district where we live. San Telmo is rough, looking back forty years to a mixture of the Bowery in New York and the old Soho of London. Like many left behind neighborhoods it is bound with marked borders.
