It was a hot July day on Lake Michigan. I left my brother Michael at the shoreline and followed my friends Andy and Aaron to a buoy that was floating yards from the shoreline.
My parents, brother and I were spending the week in Western Michigan. We drove eight hours from home so my mother could
attend a convention. The rest of my family, my brother and our dad spent the week in a camper parked outside my Uncle Barney's house. My dad and my Uncle Barney had been life long best friends. They roomed together in college. After he was done with school, my father moved back home, and his best friend settled in Western Michigan, got married, and started a family. And for a week out of my middle-school summer vacation, my father served as the chaperone and chauffeur for my uncle's three kids as well as my nine-year-old brother and my twelve-year-old self.
