BACK IN THE 1940 AND 50S, COMPOSERS LIKE PIERRE HENRY, PIERRE SCHAEFFER, JOHN CAGE AND KARLHEINZ STOCKHAUSEN WERE ALL CREATING MUSIC OUT OF AUDIO COLLAGES. THEY USED TAPE AND TURNTABLES TO SAMPLE SOUNDS FROM THE REAL WORLD LIKE THIS 1950 RECORDING BY HENRY AND SCHAEFFER.

THE ORB INITIALLY CONGEALED IN THE 1980S AROUND ALEX PATTERSON, KILLING JOKE BASS PLAYER MARTIN GLOVER, BETTER KNOWN AS YOUTH, AND JIMMY CAUTY WHO WENT ON TO SHORTLIVED ELECTRONICA PIONEERS, KLF. THE ORB CREATED A RECONSTRUCTED WORLD THAT SAMPLED SOUNDS FROM ACROSS THE SPECTRUM AND LACED THEM TOGETHER IN HALLUCINOGENIC ATMOSPHERES AND THROBBING DUB GROOVES LIKE LITTLE FLUFFY CLOUDS. THAT PIECE SAMPLED AN INTERVIEW WITH SINGER RICKIE LEE JONES.
