Piece Description

Youth producer Dolna Smithback attended the NM Peaceworks Conference In Santa Fe, New Mexico where two schools: Monte Del Sol Charter School, a public school for middle and high school students and The United World College, based in Montezuma, NM and is a prep college with students from over 85 different countries, came together to put on a conference about peace. There were many workshops held over the 3 day weekend including: how to build green, gardening, social justice, discussions about peace and conflict in other places around the world and radio workshops where students voiced their opinions about social justice, privilege and passions. One of the most exciting events was listening to Ocean Robbins, yes, the great grandson of the man who founded the 31 favors that we enjoy today. In this piece you will hear Ocean talk about his views on stereotypes and the way that animals can communicate with humans yet that humans cannot nonviolently communicate with each other. You will also hear students from the United World College talk about how they want to help change the world.

Can we all get along?!

We are all humans and we need to put our differences aside. We need to stop using non-violence in all aspects of our communications to each other. Our judgements should not get the better of us, we need to live together. This world is so diverse and this world needs to understand all aspects of nationalities.

Review of How Can Humans Get Along

"It's not differences that divide us, it's our judgments about each other that do" is a quote by Margaret Wheatley which is used as the thesis statement for Dolna Smithback's piece about peace. She uses tape from a New Mexico Peaceworks Conference to illustrate her point that people can get along. The majority of the piece uses a light-hearted anecdote from a speech given at the conference that tells a story of trying to communicate with fruit flies. The story is told by Ocean Robbins (a peace activist since age 7), the point of his story is that if he can communicate with fruit flies there's no reason that humans can't communicate with each other.
The piece is a little choppy in the flow; especially when it moves away from the point to ask what some of the conference members want to do to change the world. Despite that, the overall point gets through that humans need to get along. This peace would be good for a show about communication or peace.

Review of How Can Humans Get Along

Generation Y'ers, I pose a question to you, how many times have you heard your grandparents & parents start a disgruntled rant by saying "Kids these days..." & then proceed to say something along the lines of "spend way too many hours playing video games", "could care less about what's happening in the world", "have no work ethic at all", and my personal favorite, "listen to their music WAY TOO LOUD".

There's no doubt that youth today suffer from the negative dispostions of our elders. It can be tough to dispel the misconceptions of those who have been labeled as the "Greatest Generation". It's time for a more accurate depiction. Helping the cause is Dolna Smithback of Santa Fe Youth Radio. In her piece "How Can Humans Get Along", Dolna effectively showcases the strengths of our generation by creating this piece in which she attends the New Mexico Peace Works Conference (NMPWC) amongst an international community of young people.

The most charming part of the piece is when we hear from NMPWC keynote speaker Ocean Robbins, young founder of the Non-Profit organization "Yes Now" (and also great grandson of the wonderful man who gave us Baskin-Robbins 31 Flavors! (somehow I can't imagine anyone named Ocean not working in the Non-Profit sector)). Ocean tells an Aesop-like tale of fruit flies that's gaurenteed to make you smile and feel good on the inside. His voice is direct, oddly familiar, and he commands the moment. For the most part Dolna captures his storytelling insight, however the audio is a bit soft here and therefore loses a bit of its power.

The piece also features Dolna interviewing her piers at the conference. Dolna is able to garner some wonderful responses, nothing short of inspiring.

The piece overall flows nicely from segment to segment and well-crafted, a real professional job here on Dolna's part. Thank you Dolna for helping the cause!
