Lede:
For many people passing through northern Central Oregon, the tiny town of Antelope is a wide spot on the road to Fossil. This quiet ranching community started out as a freight wagon stop from the gold fields of John Day. After World War Two, the town became a retirement community until the early eighties when the Rajneeshees bought a local ranch and took over. During the fight, locals lost their small school. The Baghwan and the national media spotlight left in the mid-eighties and downtown Antelope...population 37...has quietly continued since.
These days, rush hour on the main street is when the deer that have bedded down in the city park stroll out of town before the cafe opens across the street.
KLCC?s Central Oregon correspondent, Bing Bingham, sat down near the kitchen in the Antelope Store and Cafe and had this conversation with three area old timers... (included in piece)
