Review of 11 Central Ave #83. Plagiarism, written by James Reiss.I don't normally listen to radio-plays, but this caught me. It's funny as heck, but it's also a novel way of approaching story-telling for radio. It approaches art, in fact, as in the work of certain mid-century Jewish storytellers who reveal truth in the mundane. The dialogue is mostly faultless. I love the way it shows how parents forget the way youth is lived, and that kids are capable of working independently. The girl's writing is indeed good, some notches better than that earnest-teenager kind of introspection, and the last fifteen or so seconds are just perfect. I can see the dad staring at his thumbs, half-joking that they're getting all tangled. Good work, Mr. Reiss! |

Review of 11 Central Ave #83. Plagiarism, written by James Reiss.I happened to be in Chicago when this aired during mid-morning news programming and it was a refreshing break from the madness of the day. Two parents, one slightly more neurotic than the other, fret over their daughter?s suspected plagiarism. My favorite line is when the kid says, ?Why are you talking about me in the 3rd person?? The writing is sharp and fast, the performances dead on. Though it?s fiction, it has the texture of real life, so one feels like a fly on the wall of their kitchen. Made me chuckle with recognition and I don?t even have kids. Great to have a little theatre pop out of the radio. I'll bet lots of listeners would get a kick out of work of this ilk. |

Sydney Dating
If someone asks me out on yet one more "dinner and a movie" date I'm going to scream. Doesn't anyone have a brain or an imagination anymore?
I had so many better dates in college where we didn't have any money - we simply had to come up with fun things to do to entertain ourselves.
Dinner and a movie is an easy cop-out because it doesn't take any thought and certainly no preparation. But I'd nearly give my first born child for another "real" date. Like where you go and "do stuff."
