Bruce Nilles attorney with the Sierra Club and head of their Midwest Clean Energy Campaign tells us about the on going effort to build new coal fired energy plants. Coal fired plants are the largest source of green house gases in the US. If the proposed new plants are built it will completely negate the rest of the world's efforts to control green house gas emissions under the Kyoto Protocol. Under the Bush administration 150 new plants have been proposed. (www.sierraclub.org/coal) Besides the effects on global warming, coal plant emissions create serious health hazards. Many thousands of deaths each year are attributed to the effects of air pollution. Coal plants are one of the greatest contributors to air pollution. Coal is one of the most polluting sources of energy available, jeopardizing our health and our environment. It is time for us to stop investing in coal and invest in clean alternative sources of power!
