Yeah, what about the fathers???
The story was very surprising to me because I did not expect the father-to-be in the story to be 20 years old, nor did I expect him to still be with his pregnant girlfriend. I expected the reporter to interview a teenage boy of 16 or 17 years old, who got someone pregnant and ran away from his responsibility. That was a good choice because in the first few sentences she dispelled the stereotype of the subject that she reporting about. It made me realize that 20 is still very young to take on the responsibility of having a child. A 20 year old most likely does not have the financial or emotional resources needed to bring a child into the world, which adds to the burden of having a child in any circumstance. It also made me realize that being a young unwed father-to-be does not mean that the young man will abandon his pregnant girlfriend. She did a good job of not leaning on stereotypes to tell the story. By doing this, her story was unpredictable and drew me in. I appreciated the young man's ability to articulate his feelings of uncertainty and fear about the upcoming birth of his child, but also his support of the mother-to-be.
Ms. Thompson also did a great job of explaining that there are not many programs for the young father-to-be. And just like she asked, I want to know why.
