Homenewpic_small On Tuesday March 4th 2008 a joint committee of the California State Legislature heard testimony about the toxic legacy of mining in California. The Sierra Nevada Gold Country as well as other parts of the State are contaminated with Mercury, Arsenic, Cyanide and other toxics from nearly 50,000 abandoned mines that also pose other physical hazards. In addition State Legislators heard about the genocide of the native tribes who were run off the land and/or killed when gold was discovered on the land they had lived on for 10,000 years. We here from Scientists, Activists, Governmental Managers and Tribal Leaders about the problems and more importantly some real solutions.
