Description:

TOLD AND RETOLD: Story and song with Gioia Timpanelli

Master story teller Gioia Timpanelli (Sometimes the Soul: Two Novellas of Sicily) celebrates one of our oldest forms, and most vital, of expression, in this first in a series of seasonal specials.

This hour-long winter season special draws on traditional and contemporary story and memoir to explain and express all the cycles of existence, our relationship to nature and each other, and the quiet miracle of day to day life.

Program segments include readings by Timpanelli of traditional Indian and Japanese stories and a segment of Thomas Hardy's magical glimpse of English country life, Mellstock Lane, interwoven with music and commentary about the place of story in our lives. "It shall be told and retold" is a traditional Italian saying that points up the way in which the form moves from generation to generation. In addition to Timpanelli's readings, there are featured readings by Kate Barnes, the poet laureate of Maine, and experimental fiction writer Eric Darton. The hour is rounded out with a lively discussion with guest artist Robert Bly. Bly reads a gorgeous selection of winter poems, and he and Timpanelli -- long time friends and fellow performers -- explore the nature of the creative act, and use a well-loved classic, "The Shoe Maker and the Elves," as a point of departure for a thinking about how grace and gifts manifest themselves in our lives. In this sometimes cold and sombre season, new growth is waiting, and the warmth of friendship matters even more.
