Before slavery rears its ugly head in North America, Africans and people of African descent traverse the northeastern part of the continent as free entrepreneurs - traders, guides and interpreters; men such as Matthieu Da Costa, and "Jan" Rodrigues. Who they were - especially Rodrigues, the man the Dutch called "The Mulatto" - how they interacted with the Europeans and Native Americans, their value and impact, is the heart of Segment #2, and aptly sets the stage for the next segment.

The PRX production is invaluable. School age students in NYC need access to this historical information.
As an American Indian of African descent, with an extended Dominican family, I/we are thrilled to have access to this material for family members, young & old alike.
We jokingly state that Juan/Jan Rodrigues was the original trailblazer for his Dominican descendents'taking up residence in Northern Manhattan, Yonkers & The Bronx.
I/we are most appreciative of the complete works available online by PRX.org.
Respectfully,
