Piece Description
Most countries in Asia are distinctly unfriendly to gays. In a country like Singapore, then, where it was, till recently, illegal to chew gum it is not so surprising that there are still a number of serious penalties on the statue books which make the lives of ordinary homosexuals exceedingly difficult. Last fall, an attempt to repeal these laws failed. The days of Bugis Street, chockablock with dazzling transgender and transsexual darlings, are long gone. Now, though, the government is beginning to realize that it might have to do something to change its image or lose out to other countries in the region like Thailand and Hong Kong. Journalist Claudia Cragg, the author of a number of books on Asia, decided to find out more.
