Lenoir_small Music for the MLK Day holiday. Bluesman J. B. Lenoir was one of the first blues artists to write blues songs for the civil rights movement. They appeared on his stunning acoustic albums in the 1960s and are now all compiled on the CD Vietnam Blues. We will play three of them. Also, we'll hear John Coltrane's "Alabama" which is based on the cadences of Dr. King's voice in his eulogy for the girls killed in the bombing of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama in 1963. This show includes Ruby Wilson's version of Sam Cooke's "A Change is Gonna Come" as well, and a track from the African-American wind ensemble Imani Winds from their tribute album to Josephine Baker. We also hear James Taylor singing about Martin Luther King, and we'll open up a new album from Mississippi bluesman Bill (Howl-N-Madd) Perry -- not bad for just one hour!
