Charlie Schroeder and his wife, Wendy Mok, celebrate Chinese New Year...the old-fashioned way Read the full description.

Yearoftheboar_small Chinese New Year is very important to Charlie Schroeder's wife, Wendy. So in 2007 he vowed to celebrate it--as accurately as possible. The pair "sweep away bad luck" (and terrify their cats), buy the right kind of flowers (that Charlie thinks is garlic) and refuse to wash their hair for three days (well, at least Charlie does). What follows is a touching, humorous portrait of a husband and wife struggling to uphold ancient traditions of China's most important holiday.

Broadcast History

Originally aired on Weekend America March 3rd, 2007.

Timing and Cues

For some, celebrating the New Year isn't a one day affair ? it's a cultural journey. In 2007 Independent producer Charlie Schroeder and his wife, Wendy Mok, kept a diary of their Chinese New Year experience, as they try their best to stick to tradition at their home in Los Angeles. But sometimes being traditional is harder than it looks.

Outro can start at 5:38 after final music cue has played for a couple seconds.
