Crusts - Kim Szawan - Zookeeper

In Australia, when someone asks "What do you do for a Crust?" They are asking what you do for a living, your job, your profession. Our Series "Crusts", provides vignettes from people around the world, looking at what they do, why they love doing it, and how, if you are interested in this profession, you can get into it too. Our guest for this installment in the series is Kim Szawan. Kim is a Zookeeper. She works hands on with animals that we can only dream of getting close too. Kim has worked with Penguins, a Flotilla of Australian Birds and now currently attends to animals found only in the African Savannah. Kim's consideration for animals goes beyond the husbandry she provides and extends into her daily life as she considers the impact she imparts on the environment that sustains the animals she works for. Kim is passionate about her animals and the care that she provides for them, some of the stories that she relates about how these animals interact with each other, are enough to keep you in awe, and sometimes stitches of laughter. Just ask her sometime how she was introduced to a Giraffe.
