Voices Without a Vote

The memory of my father inspires our search for working non-voters in Carolina. Read the full description.

Rebeccasdad_small In an election year, the politically active voices of our democracy are often the only ones we hear. But because my daddy was my first hero, and not a voting man, I wanted to find some voices like his to talk about democracy. This year, John Edwards hopes to become the vice-president of the United States. His parents were mill workers, like mine. They live in the little town of Robbins, N.C., where the textile mill has been closed for thirteen years. My co-producer, Libby Conn and I went to Robbins, in search of working non-voters. We found ourselves at Amy's Cafe.

Review of Voices Without a Vote

This hybrid commentary/news feature is fascinating. We've heard from undecided voters but to hear from non voters puts this election and the democratic process in a new --and not so flattering-- light. Producer Rebecca Moon talks to non-voting mill workers in North Carolina. To hear these men, who sound just like John Edwards, speak so cynically about politicians and the presidency is eerie and funny and sad. This piece does an amazing job of leaving you feeling both hopeless and inspired. This is a great piece to play on election day and any day until then. It would be a great ME and/or ATC drop in.

An interesting reminder about some basic issues when you step up to vote, like trust. Problem is, if we followed that sense, that instinct, none of us would vote either, most likely. So it's pretty depressing but certainly a thought provoking nudge. This would make a nice counterpoint to any sort of "get out and vote". It's a tough call, of course we have to vote, but this might give pause about HOW you vote.

What strikes me most about this story are the voices that are used to tell it. Rebecca Moon's writing and delivery in this piece are absolutely excellent. This piece feels so real because Moon obviously has a strong connection to the men she has chosen to interview as well as wonderful, detailed recollections of her father. This would be a great piece to put in the election coverage mix.
