Piece Description
This program can be aired (after licensing) by all stations -- including Classical stations that carry any form of programming on the weekend such as Garrison Keillor's ''A Prairie Home Companion.'' Before his death in April 2007, Don Ho was attracting crowds of approprimately 1,000 each week in Hawaii at his show on Waikiki Beach from Canada and the US. The Ho family has continued his live show to sell out crowds. Unique vistors to Don Ho's show total more than 50,000 a year -- and he has many fans who can not travel. Since his death, in similar fashion to what happened with Elvis, Don Ho's music is selling bigger than ever and Karaoke Bars now have an increasing demand for Don Ho tunes. You can tie-in to the growing popularity of the moment and let your supporters and potential supporters know that your station will honor the memory of Don Ho and feature him as the special guest on an upcoming one-hour anniversary memorial special. This ''evergreen'' version here is a news-hole version. New transcript appears under the ''For Stations'' tab. You can find a continuous, full, no-hole version at http://www.prx.org/pieces/22414. Compression was added to audio on 7-March-2008 -- see Audio Notes below. Don Ho, in his last radio appearance before he died, explains the in-depth meanings of the Hawaiian word ''Aloha'' -- and he reveals details about his background in Hawaii that led to his becoming the most famous entertainer in Hawaii -- known and loved worldwide! Don gives the history of his mother, Honey, and her little Bar (which provided Don the earliest start to his singing career. He gives some facts about his song-writer friend Kui Lee and, among other things, Don talks briefly about his stem-cell operation in Hong Kong. During this program Don Ho sings a then unreleased, live-from-the-beach version of ''Tiny Bubbles.'' Don Ho responds honestly and humorously to the interviewer's question to describe himself in 25 words or less. This is the last face-to-face public radio interview that Don Ho granted (on 31-August-2006) before his death on the Saturday morning of 14-April-2007. Timing & Cues for this program will be found under the ''For Stations'' tab. A continuous, full, no-hole version of this program is available at: http://www.prx.org/pieces/22414 Audition-Broadcast CD available at the following link (proceeds 100 percent towards local airing station's licensing fee) http://www.PRWW.org/CDHO.html For those stations that do not have a PRX licensing account, this piece can be licensed from: http://www.prww.org/PR.html Audio Notes: Audio was compressed on 7-March-2008 using Waves(R) L3 Ultramaximizer(R). Review of Year-End Show - A Tribute to the Life & Music of Don Ho (w/News Hole)Aloha! And Fare Well Don Ho! I'm sad to learn of the loss of our unofficial Ambassador of Hawaii. This program presented his a mini auto-biography that makes me feel that I now know Don Ho personally. The host did an exceptional job of interfacing with the guest and asked just the questions I wanted to hear answered. What could have been done better here? Maybe you could have made it two hours instead of one. When to air it? The sooner the better! |

Review of Year-End Show - A Tribute to the Life & Music of Don Ho (w/News Hole)The enlightening interview with Don Ho was successful in revealing the many facets of this timeless entertainer, who was loved by young and old, alike. Knowing that this was the last live interview given before his death, makes it even more special. The interviewer was very thorough starting with the ancestry which revealed that there was not just one race in Hawaii, but various ethnic groups. The sound effects made the listener feel as if he were sitting in the audience while the singing of "Tiny Bubbles" was taking place. This was a very thorough interview which succeeded in being factual as well as entertaining. I enjoyed it very much. |

Review of Year-End Show - A Tribute to the Life & Music of Don Ho (w/News Hole)
WOW! Best Public Radio Program I've Ever Heard!
I love a variety of music from classical to Duke Ellington and I never really heard too much of Don Ho's music before. Your program helped me to see that he's not only Hawaii's Elvis as some call him but Hawaii's Frank Sinatra and Harry Connick, Jr., too, and he was very personable.
I tend to like it when a program gives good insight, such as this program did in an intimate way, into the background and personality of a person in the public spotlight. As a tribute to the life of a man with whom I believe many Americans identify as a legend of this great country, this program is tops! I only wish it could have been longer!
I would like to hear it on the air on New Year's Day or sooner. And, I now plan to become a member of public radio. Your program made me a believer. I love the classical. I love the jazz.
