Learning is Natural, School is Optional

From: Deb Krumholz
Length: 09:58

A discussion with the founder of a self-directed learning center for teens who challenges the conventional wisdom that we must all graduate from high school in order to be successful adults Read the full description.

Default-piece-image-0 North Star Self-Directed Learning Center in Western Massachusetts is offering an intriguing alternative to traditional high school. Interviews with the founder and one of its participants reveal a revolutionary approach to secondary education. When the teen participants take control of their education, they begin to get excited about learning, some for the first time. A natural by-product of their new independence are life lessons and life skills that they might never have learned if they stayed in school - time management, taking initiative, learning to follow through and enjoying your life, rather than merely biding your time. This is a provocative story that presents a compelling argument for re-thinking what we all take for granted, that school is the best path to living a fulfilling, successful life.

SOME TEENS ARE BORED IN SCHOOL. THEY FEEL FRUSTRATED. THEY DON?T FIT IN. THEY DREAM OF THE DAY WHEN THEY?LL FINISH HIGH SCHOOL AND CAN FINALLY GET ON WITH THEIR LIVES. FIFTEEN-YEAR-OLD NIA WAS ONE OF THOSE KIDS.

ACT NIA
