Narr: Darlene Thomas is no typical politico. She's the mayor of Oakland's St. Mary's Center in West Oakland, a homeless shelter for seniors in West Oakland.(:09)
Mayor: Why do they call me the mayor? Well, [more laughter] I nominated myself the mayor. (:07)
Narr: St. Mary's is a social hub for the neighborhood's senior citizens and families in need. It provides free food for needy families, recreation and health care for seniors, but it's best known for its work as a temporary shelter for the growing population of homeless senior citizens in the area. It wasn't long ago that the Mayor hit upon hard times. Like many, she had trouble stretching her budget to cover her food, her medications, and rent? (:22)
