Southern Slices: Summer Institute Stories from CDS
From: The Center for Documentary Studies
Length: 54:00
Radio-making isn't just for professionals. Every summer, several dozen people from across the country converge on the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University to learn the skills of audio documentary work -- recording, shaping and crafting a piece, and mixing it on the computer. They get guidance and inspiration from seasoned producers. (They also tend to eat good barbecue and see a Durham Bulls baseball game.)
This show pulls together seven of the best works made by those students -- many of them first-time producers. "Southern Slices" is hosted by CDS audio program director John Biewen.

CDS Memories
Yes everyone makes an audio documentary at CDS but for me, learning the craft was secondary to experiencing the best of radio for a wonderful week.
The CDS staff and nationally celebrated producers curated a week of classics radio productions for our listenings. For the first time in my life, radio wasn't a solitary experience. It was a celebration with fellow radio-philes and the leaders of the field.
Sure, I made my first and second documentaries at CDS and they were a thrill. However, I will always consider myself a listener, instead of a producer of radio and CDS was (and will be again in the future) my mecca for experiencing great radio.
